Why we're automating video editing, not adding AI to it

Every editor since 1990 starts with an empty timeline and waits for you to do the work. We're building one that does the editing, and keeps the timeline for when you want it.

Every video editor you have used starts from the same place: an empty timeline and a bin of clips. The tool is neutral. It waits, and you do the work.

That made sense when the hard part of editing was executing decisions: dragging, trimming, rendering. For most people making video today, execution is not the hard part. The hard part is the hours. Scrubbing through footage to find the good minute. Cutting the pauses. Syncing the captions. Fitting music under a voice. Exporting the same film three times for three screens.

We think that work should not exist. So vide0 is built to take it off you.

You say what the film should be

The first thing you do after dropping in footage is say what you want, in the same words you would use to brief a human editor.

“Make this kinder. Open on the strongest line, lose the pauses, and caption it.”

vide0 listens to your clips on your own computer, makes the cuts, adds the captions and the sound, and checks its own work by looking at the finished cut. What comes back is not a render. It is a project, on a real timeline, that you can open at any moment.

It is still your film

Automation you cannot inspect is a trap. So everything vide0 does is an ordinary edit. The assistant, the transcript and the timeline all make the same kind of change, which means they never disagree about where a cut is, and a whole request undoes in one step.

You can fix the story by deleting words from the transcript. You can slide a title, trim a cut or rebalance the sound on the timeline. The point is not to remove manual control. It is that you only reach for it when the decision is genuinely yours.

We only ship controls we can stand behind

A button that previews one thing and exports another is worse than no button. Preview and export are held to the same result, and when something cannot be done honestly yet, we leave it out rather than fake it.

Still being built

vide0 is in private beta and under heavy development. The automatic edits it makes today are a start, and many more are coming. Founding members shape the list: the things they ask for most are the things that ship first.

If you shoot more than you have time to edit, request early access.
